The Steeplechase: Tremendous Athletic Beauty in Action

Originating in 18th century Ireland as a combination of field hunting and point-to-point race to the church steeple, the steeplechase has deep roots in South Carolina dating back to its inaugural race in the 1930s. Camden's Springdale Race Course is a permanent fixture for Camden, thanks to racing legend Marion DuPont Scott, who purchased the track in the 1950s and donated it to the State of South Carolina with a permanent endowment. Today more than 65,000 spectators enjoy two premier races a year: the Carolina Cup held in the spring, and the Colonial Cup held in the fall.

Since its founding in 1930s, the non-profit Carolina Cup Racing Association has donated proceeds to the Kershaw County Media Center, The Junior Welfare League of Camden, and the Camden Jaycees.
